After I updated my DLS to a new version, it says that I am limited to a 30-day trial version

When you launch the Digital Learning System after installing a new version, you will be asked to re-register. You MUST re-register within 30 days to complete the installation process or the new version will be limited to trial accessibility. Just agree to the re-registration and follow the on-screen prompts. You will need to be connected to the Internet to re-register and activate the new software, but the process generally takes less than a minute.

Created records in KnowledgeBase are not being saved

When creating records in a KnowledgeBase, you must click the "Save" button after you have entered all of the information associated with that record and you are ready to move on. After you click "Save," a blank record will appear and you can either enter a new record or exit by clicking "Done." If you do not click "Save," your information will be lost.

When you edit an existing record, there is an auto-save feature in the Digital Learning System that saves your changes. You can turn this feature off or on from the "Options" menu item under "Tools." When the "Options" box appears, select Knowledge Manager and put a check in the box next to "Automatically save changes when editing a record."

You can also click the "Save" button after you edit each record.

The Answer button in the Knowledge Manager drops out words that I did not highlight

The Digital Learning System defaults to automatically "drop out" all instances of a particular word in the Question/Fact field when you press the Answer button, whether or not you selected them. This feature was designed to help you develop effective and challenging questions.

You can change this feature from the Options menu item under Tools. When the Options box appears, select Knowledge Manager, and from the drop-down menu next to the phrase "When adding a question drop out the answer in this manner:" select the option that best suits your needs.

When I try to open a KnowledgeBase, Microsoft Access opens and it asks for a password

The KnowledgeBases (*.MDB files) are only meant to be opened from within DLS itself; they can`t be opened from within Access or by opening the file from its folder.

Can I activate my CD-ROM by phone?

All CD-ROM based products must be activated via the internet.

Most problems regarding activation involve another program blocking access to the internet. This is done by many anti-virus and anti-spyware programs such as Norton Internet Security, the built in Windows Firewall (especially SP2), etc.

First, look in your system tray for any of the programs similar to those mentioned above. Disable them all (usually by right clicking on the icon and clicking exit or disable)

If you are connecting to the internet from home, you most likely are not using a proxy (unless you have a dedicated local spam blocking proxy set up), however if you are connecting from work, you will need to contact your IT department for proxy information.

After you have successfully activated DLS, remember to immediately turn on all your protection software.

Can I install DLS on two computers with one CD Key?

Yes.

A standard CD Key allows for registration on up to two computers, so you can install and register DLS on your desktop and notebook computers. Important: Use the same Product Code and CD Key during the registration and activation process on the second computer as you did on the first, but you will receive a new confirmation e-mail with a new authorization code -- each computer is registered separately. You must also enter all of your registration information completely, just as you did for the first registration.

If you want to install the DLS on a third computer with the same CD Key, you must first inactivate it on one of the two other computers.

How to import from a Wizcom pen scanner directly into DLS

On the pen scanner itself you need to change it to send the scanned text to your computer without storing it. On the SuperPen, you can activate this mode in the pen scanner menu under:

Scan to PC -> settings -> send immediately

This will allow the pen scanner to output everything it is scanning (in real-time) to the computer via the USB connection. To use this mode with the DLS, think of the pen scanner as a keyboard. You need to place the mouse cursor where you want to type. The same holds true with the pen scanner (since the computer thinks it's a keyboard!)

Put the pen scanner in direct mode, open DLS, place the mouse cursor in the question field, scan your question and then the pen scanner will "type" the text you are scanning into the field.

How to transfer custom KnowledgeBase's to a new computer?

Please see Completely uninstall or re-install DLS FAQ before proceeding. This link is for completely uninstalling and reinstalling, which is unnecessary if you are simply migrating to a new machine.

From the above link, all you need to do is:

- On the new computer, be sure to perform step 1 (Windows Updates)

- On the old computer, simply perform step 2 (inactivating DLS)

To migrate your custom KnowledgeBases, you can simply copy/paste them to a USB stick, CD-Rom, floppy, email attachment, or send them over the network to your new computer.

On the old computer, your custom KnowledgeBase's are located:

C:\Program Files\BrainX\Digital Learning System\Users\*.mdb

Copy them to the new machine on the desktop. Then install DLS to the new computer and start DLS. From the DLS file menu, select file -> import KnowledgeBase's and DLS will automatically load and configure the KnowledgeBase's for you.
