Remediation is much easier if you do it before students fail the CAHSEE the first time. Research shows that a student’s confidence level drops dramatically if they fail the first time. The result is that these students give up too quickly when challenging questions are encountered on subsequent exams. The solution is pro-active remediation so students will pass the first time, increasing both overall first time pass rate and AYP scores.
If current methods of remediation have not worked for Senior Non-Passers by now, chances are, they will never work. Research shows that each student has a different set of issues that prevent them from passing. The only effective solution is an individual program that identifies each student’s reason for failing, builds a personalized course plan, delivers that plan at a customized pace and level, and then reinforces the learned information until it is locked in each student’s long term memory. The result is Mastery.
English Learners seize difficult concepts faster if they first receive audio based instruction on the concepts in Spanish and then immediately practice using their new knowledge in English. The key is to provide identical instruction in both Spanish and English so students can check their understanding in both languages. However, understanding is not enough, these students must practice applying the knowledge on several different days to ensure long term material retention.
Students that perform well in class, sometimes fail the CAHSEE. These students might have test anxiety or suffer from gaps in primary knowledge. Their embarrassment is apparent, especially when they are removed from class for special remediation. These students need a personalized, online remediation solution so they can re-gain confidence and fill in their knowledge gaps on their own time, either at home or at school.
No matter how good instruction is, research shows that students will forget most of what was studied within two weeks. The only solution to this problem of forgetting is a personalized study approach that locks information into long term memory. To achieve this, any CAHSEE study approach must reinforce learned information by scheduling short study sessions on several different days each week, and encouraging repeated self evaluations. This simple study approach can accommodate English Learners and Special Education students as well. Research shows that this type of study approach can increase a student’s material retention by 300% or more.
